Trimming Dead Branches
Gemini New Moon
This Gemini New Moon is a fascinating one.
And I think the reason I’ve been scratching my head while looking at this chart is because this doesn’t feel like a New Moon that initiates in the way we usually imagine initiation. It feels more like a New Moon that filters.
Not “Let’s start something new!”
More: “Before we proceed, what can no longer come with us?”
The Sabian is actually doing a lot of the heavy lifting here.

KEYNOTE: Bringing under control nature’s power of expansion.
The intellect of man is like a tropical plant in that it tends to expand “wildly” in many directions, seeking direct contact with the sun’s rays. Like a palm tree it uses its dead leaves to protect itself against dry heat, the heat of the realm of mind when deprived of the complementary power of the feelings. A culture is characterized by specific “forms” and “prime symbols”; education’s main object, at least in cultural and classical periods, has been to contain the imagination of individuals within these traditional forms. An entirely different approach to education is being attempted in our transitional age.
At this last stage of the seventeenth five-fold sequence we have reached the level of fulfillment of the impulses which began at the first stage (Gemini 21°) in a tumultuous upsurge of self-assertion and protest against the past. Now this upsurge has found its place in the evolution of mankind and society; and - symbolically speaking - “labor” has become not only unionized, but a strong force in the body politic. Yet the energies released seek constant expansion and therefore have to be controlled. There is need for repeated PRUNING.
Most people read “pruning” and immediately think suppression. Restriction. Limitation.
But pruning is a very specific act. A gardener doesn’t cut a healthy branch because they hate growth. A gardener cuts growth that is dissipating energy. Growing in the wrong direction. Preventing fruiting, or blocking light from reaching the whole organism. The purpose isn’t less life. It’s more coherent life. And that distinction feels incredibly important here.
The astrology feels similar.
The New Moon in Gemini wants options. Gemini’s instinct is expansion through curiosity. More ideas. More pathways. More conversations, and possibilities.
But then we find the ruler, and he is not in Gemini. Mercury is in Cancer. And that’s strange, especially for this New Moon. Because Cancer doesn’t ask what else is possible. Cancer asks: “What actually matters?”
Mercury receives two very different messages.
He sextile Mars in Taurus, which says: “Take action.” But Taurus action. Slow action. Physical, material action. Build the thing. Plant the seed. Send the email. Repair the fence. Cook the meal. No theory. Embodiment.
Mercury also square Saturn in Aries. And Saturn says: “Not so fast.”Movement requires accountability. Saturn in Aries is asking: “What are you willing to stand behind?” Long term. This square is creating friction between emotional truth (Mercury in Cancer), and individual authority (Saturn in Aries).
The result isn’t necessarily paralysis. It’s refinement.
The mutual reception is what fascinates me.
Moon in Gemini. Mercury in Cancer. Each governing the other’s house. The feeling informs the thought. The thought informs the feeling.
They’re trapped in a beautiful feedback loop. Which means this New Moon may not produce dramatic external events. It may produce profound internal clarification.
And this is where I find myself grappling about the Sabian. I don’t think the symbol is ultimately about suppressing human expansion. I think it is about preventing incoherent expansion. There is a difference.
A palm tree that grows wildly eventually collapses under its own weight. A civilization can do the same. A government, an economy, an ideology, a relationship all can do the same. Even a spiritual path can collapse under its own weight. Expansion without feedback becomes distortion.
The pruning is not of humanity’s expansion, but in our inability of facing reality created by constant feedback suppression.
Healthy systems require feedback. When feedback is suppressed long enough, reality stops being corrected. Then the system begins pruning itself through crisis. Reality always returns eventually. Always. Not as revenge, but as information.
The thing that strikes me most about this New Moon is that it doesn’t feel revolutionary. It feels corrective. Quietly corrective.
Like reality slipping a note under the door. A note that says: “This path is viable.” “This path is not.” “This branch bears fruit.” “This branch only consumes energy.”
And Chiron at the end of Aries adds something beautiful. The sextile suggests that healing comes through courage. Simple courage. The courage to see, admit, and to stop pretending. The courage to trim the branch you’ve known needed trimming for years, in order for you to keep growing.
Growth is the willingness to remove what prevents life from moving where it truly wants to go.
And that applies just as much to individuals as it does to civilizations. Perhaps especially to civilizations. Because civilizations, like palm trees, sometimes become so enamored with expansion that they forget the purpose of growth was never growth itself. It was fruit. And fruit always requires pruning.
